While it may sound simplistic and you may laugh at the thought but I’ve definitely been turned on to the power of positivity. While facing the challenges of starting and growing a business along with the natural and normal life challenges it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the challenges and forget just how far I’ve come. When I add in the many thoughts and opinions coming from every side on social media it’s very easy to get sucked into the negativity, which can be a complete emotional drain. This year has been a challenge from the start so here’s how I’ve been handling things.
I’ve found some helpful ideas that have kept me focused on the positive, leaving the negative to others and it’s made a big difference for me.
Two things that definitely bring positivity into my life.
1. Seek out and surrounding myself with positive people. Attitudes can rub off. Wouldn’t you rather have positive thoughts rubbing off on you? I know I do.
2. Look for the positive in the world. As someone who likes to be informed I found myself taking in so much negative news and information that the positive items were almost drowned out. Now I carefully curate the news I review and I purposefully seek out good news. It takes a little bit of extra work but it’s worth it to find things that make me smile and feel good rather than cause worry or dismay.
3. Sharing positivity. I’ve found that when I can share good news or positive stories or even a laugh it makes me feel good. It’s also good to hear positive responses from others and positivity multiplies quickly
4. Take a break. One of the most helpful tricks has been simply turning off the news and getting off social media for a bit. It gives me a chance to breathe and relax. When I get refreshed I get back in but those breaks are the best.
5. Focus on gratitude. Maybe it was because of Oprah or maybe it was because of the book Simple Abundance, I’m really not sure but years ago I started keeping a gratitude journal. Every day I find things that I’m grateful for and it forces me to think of the positive no matter what the situation is on that day I always have so much to be grateful for even on those days I have to look really hard.
6. Stop comparing myself to others. This one can be tricky to do but can make a huge difference. So many times you see what others want you to see, their best, the final result of ups and downs, trials and failures, restarts and many times a lot of hard work and long journeys. When you compare yourself mid trial or mid journey to someone else, who is in a different part of their journey it can be discouraging. I remind myself that I don’t know what others are going thorough or have been through and everyone is different so it’s a waste of time to compare and I don’t have time to waste.
7. Treating myself. I’ll admit it this one can be easy but it still works. I make a point of treating myself to the things that I like and things that make me feel good. Sometimes I have to remind myself to do something fun but when I do I never regret it.
8. Taking care of myself. Even if I have to force myself to move from negative to positive thoughts it gets easier. Consciously pushing away the negative only makes room for the positive. I try to spend so much time and effort on positive things that I don’t even have time for the negative. If you’re like me this is when the ideas flow and I really get things done and make moves.
What do you think? How do you fight the negativity?
Just a few more things that always help with my mindset.
