When it comes to cameras no matter what you have, you can take great photos. I use a combination of cameras and lenses that cost thousands of dollars, point and shoot cameras at a variety of price points and my phone to take photos and
Do I really need an expensive camera?
As a photographer I get asked this question often. The answer of course is no, no, no and did I say no? The camera as a tool and like other tools what it can do will depend on the skill of the person using it. Don’t get me wrong, if you’ve spent any time around a photographer you know we love our gear, we do love fancy cameras and equipment and can easily collect gear; but the truth of the matter is that it’s not the tool, it’s the craftsman using the tool. A skilled photographer can take amazing photos with the most basic camera think instant, polaroid, think 20-30 year old cameras while someone who doesn’t know how to use the tool can take an awful photo with the latest most expensive high tech equipment available.
Think about cooking. Does having an expensive fancy stove make the food better? I’d argue no it does not. It’s all about having someone who knows what they re doing knows how to use the tools you can create an amazing meal on any stove and many people have ruined meals on very expensive stoves.
Even today I often work with gear that is far from expensive. I still regularly use my first DSLR, an entry level Nikon that stopped being produced years ago. I use point and shoot cameras one of which cost less than $100 several years ago; and like almost everyone I use my cellphone to take photos. Yes there are some benefits to not only a part of business; it can certainly make life easier, but if you’re not a professional any camera you have will work. There will be limitations but that is the case for anything, limitations or not everyone can take great photos with any camera.
Don’t believe me?
