It can be amazingly happy, amazingly sad, or a bittersweet combination of both for many. It’s the holiday with the most flower sales and it brings many families together. It’s Mother’s Day. It’s the day we celebrate our mothers, biological and not and show love to those who took on the job of mothering us. It’s the day we try to relax and accept appreciation from those who love us.
I am very blessed to still have my mom to celebrate with and I count that blessing everyday, after watching my mom fight two bouts of cancer I’m always reminded of how fragile life can be. I also know so many who have lost their mothers, or lost the connection with her and who find that Mother’s day is a reminder of what they’ve lost and what they are missing. With everyone sharing their happiness, please remember those for whom this day is a hard one and share some kind words and hugs to let them know you care.
I have a wonderful mom but I also grew up surrounded by a host of strong women. Great grandmothers, grand mothers, great aunts, aunts, those I could aunt, my friends mothers, church mothers, and so many more. They were nurturers, comforters, teachers, disciplinarians; full of wisdom and life lessons. They generously gave out hugs, taught me the importance of family, and showed me tricks of the kitchen. They gave out treats and sweets and toys but also stern words, a little tough love and a lot of tough love when needed. Loved and adored but never to be played with they all raised me to be the person I am today. I’m blessed to have many still in my life today but I’m also thankful for all of my angels in heaven, that taught me, loved me and watched over me. I have no doubt that they are watching me now.
I watch the next generation of women in my life and I can see the lessons that have been passed down for generations and are still being learned and lived today. When things get worrisome I take conform in the fact that we have been taught well and are in good hands.
So on this Mother’s Day, I hope you celebrate if you can, remember your angels and reach out and connect with those who love you. No matter their role or title. Life is short and can change in an instant so be sure to show your appreciation every day.
