On of my favorite bible verse’s is Matthew 17:20. It tells the story of when the disciples had trouble driving out a devil and they went to Jesus and he drove it out. When they questioned him about why they could not do it, he told them that their trouble came from having too little faith. He then goes on to say that they only need faith the size of a mustard seed and anything is possible. This verse has been a comfort to me so often when I’ve needed it. It reminds me that even when things seem very difficult, when the storms are raging in my life and it seems like things will definitely get worse before they get better that I just need to hold on to my faith. The fact that he makes it clear that you just need the tiniest bit of faith is comforting when things seems so hard, it might feel like it’s impossible but then i remember that nothing is impossible and I just need that tiny bit of faith, of course I strive to have much more faith than that but when things get tough the message brings comfort.
Mustard seeds are tiny, about 1-2 millimeters but the plants or trees grow to an average of 6-20 feet and some can get even bigger. From the smallest beginnings, they grow and spread. Just like faith in the story, the tiny start can grow and spread and then everything is possible..
I revisit this verse again and again when I need to and it never fails to lift my spirits, no matter how down I may be.
